So far I have tried my best to remain unbiased in my news blog, but with this recent story in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review I am finding it really difficult to not be snarky.

Apparently, Greenpeace announced in a commissioned report that killing kangaroos is one way to combat global warming.

“As it turns out, kangaroos are just as flatulent as cattle and sheep — belching and breaking wind across the vast expanse of Australia’s Outback. The methane gasses kangaroos produce rise into the atmosphere where they trap heat, increasing Earth’s temperature. And worse, their wide-ranging travels require a constant clearing of trees and shrubs that can absorb such greenhouse gasses.”

According to the Tribune Review editorial, kangaroos outnumber Australia’s human population by about 4 million, or about 19.5 percent.

Under Australian law, the article states, about 3 million kangaroos are allowed to be harvested each year, mostly for their skins and meat. Greenpeace campaign manager Mark Wakeham said eating more kangaroos for dinner is just “one of the lifestyle changes we can make. Changing our meat consumption habits is a small way to make an impact.”

What makes the kangaroo so much gasier than any other animal on the planet? There has to be a better way to fight global warming.
